Rationalizing Trump's Behavior: Appalling!

Commentary about today's coverage of Trump's weekend comments

For those of you who are regular watchers of From and Fuller, you know that for the last year and a half, I've been arguing that Donald Trump is an existential threat to democracy and that the only priority I have in this election is to make sure that he is not re-elected. Like Liz Cheney, I believe Donald Trump should never again see the inside of the Oval Office.

But I've been appalled even more recently by his most recent rhetoric.

The idea that he believes that his political adversaries in the Democratic Party are his enemies is beyond, is just beyond the pale. And that he is willing to use and repeatedly stated that he's willing to use the military against people who disagree with him. That is just a stunning position for candidate for president of United States.

And the thing that's most concerning is that he means it because he tried to do it on January 6th. He tried to use, essentially create violence to incite violence to stop the peaceful transfer of power, which is the central tenet of democracy. He was stopped from his efforts to try to arrest Joe Biden by his attorney general. He probably would have had the military leaders like General Milley, who he wanted to execute because he didn't follow his orders to use troops against civilians, American civilians mean, so we know that Trump is serious about this.

And it is very perplexing to see Republicans and Republican thought leaders like the Wall Street Journal editorial board rationalize it away with this moral equivalency. I mean, it's so Trump wants to end the democracy. He wants to, he won't accept the results of the election if he loses and he wants to use troops against his political adversaries. And know, Kamala Harris once had a very left-wing position, probably something I disagreed with, but it is certainly not the moral equivalent. And it is bizarre to see.

People like Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, tried to rationalize that away. It has to stop, and Trump must be defeated.

The way that we solve our political disputes in the United States is not through violence, not through the use of troops against our political adversaries, but at that ballot box. And I hope the majority of Americans who... are in the anti-Trump coalition will all come out and vote and prevent him from ever occupying the Oval Office again.
